Professional lighting architects and lighting designers “think” in light. In addition to its materiality and shape, light is basically a building material. The meaning and design of light — daylight and artificial light — is elementary for architecture and interior design. Ideally, lighting planning and lighting design should be conceived as a trendsetting and room-shaping or supporting principle right from the start, already in the draft planning. That is why, in this volume, we present both architectural offices and lighting designers in a quasi-dialogue — light and architecture are inseparable. Even the builders of the past thought about the aesthetic and functional relationship between space and light and were aware of the emotional power of light on the viewer and the power of its staging. The physiological and psychological effect of light on people and human well-being is increasingly moving back to the center of attention: Human Centric Lighting is the buzzword of the hour in the lighting industry — a human-centered lighting concept for interiors, in which, in addition to the visual, the emotional, and the non-visual effects of light are taken into account. Nature is also the source of ideas for the play of light and shadow, reflection and color, and flows into designs. We invite you to inspiring examples of the interaction of light and architecture across the globe from North America to Europe, the United Arab Emirates to Asia. With the selection of works by renowned and award-winning lighting designers and architects presented here, we feature a broad spectrum of lighting design, objects, and specialist areas. From historical buildings and sacred buildings to modern new buildings, private houses, and public buildings. Cultural institutions, museums, movie theaters and cinema planning. Corporate headquarters and coworking spaces. Luxury hotels and shop design. Up to light art and urban lighting – inner-city lighting concepts – and lighting design for outdoor spaces.
